Comparing the results of bariatric endoscopic procedures and semaglutide injections for the treatment of obesity

At Atlantic Gastroenterology of Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Alexander Shapsis is pleased to offer a wide range of specialized services for new and current patients. Patients who are dealing with metabolic dysfunction or obesity will need to work with a doctor to reach a healthier weight and manage their weight over time. This ensures a healthy body–and lifestyle–that will give you back years of your life!

Recent studies have determined that bariatric endoscopic procedures will outperform other non-surgical obesity treatments available on the market today, including semaglutide injections. However, there may be promise in combining various therapies for more dramatic weight loss. This can be life-changing for patients with other conditions developed due to their high weight, such as diabetes and increased risk of heart disease.

What have we learned about semaglutide injections vs. endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty for weight loss?

This study, which was presented in Digestive Disease Week 2023 (abstract 455), evaluated patients who have metabolic dysfunction associated with steatotic liver disease, or MASLD, along with obesity and found that while semaglutide injections and bariatric endoscopic

procedures, such as endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, were effective in helping patients with obesity experience weight loss, a combination of the two may be the “sweet spot” to see the best possible results. Combining both injections and bariatric endoscopic procedures may well be the first line of treatment for patients who need to reach a healthier weight fast to maintain a high-quality lifestyle and extend their lifespan dramatically–avoiding obesity-related conditions.
