Is berberine “nature’s Ozempic?”

At EndoSlim Clinic NY of Atlantic Gastroenterology, Dr. Alexander Shapsis, our Board-certified gastroenterologist and obesity medicine specialist, routinely works with patients struggling with their weight. Many popular trends are making their way mainstream and are piquing the curiosity of patients with obesity and chronic obesity. This includes diabetes medications such as Ozempic for weight loss. But what about alternative options?

Let’s look at another supplement that is gaining popularity, berberine, and find out if it can benefit patients in the Brooklyn, New York area.

What is berberine?

Berberine is best described as a supplement derived from a variety of plants, including tree turmeric, barberry, and Oregon grape. It is typically sold in either capsules or powders. Berberine is a supplement that has been used for hundreds of years in more traditional Chinese medicine to treat various ailments. However, it is more recently known for its potential health benefits as it can regulate one’s metabolism and lower natural blood glucose levels. This is what has earned its name as “nature’s Ozempic.”

Studies have been done to determine if berberine has enough benefits for patients considering weight loss options. A systemic review performed in 2021 showed that berberine can reduce both obesity and insulin resistance in patients who have been diagnosed and are treated for type 2 diabetes. However, the weight loss results have not been staggering, with most patients experiencing between two to three percent body weight loss while taking berberine. When compared to the diabetes drug of semaglutide injections, these numbers are low, where those patients are often experiencing about 15% body weight loss.
