According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), colorectal cancer, also known as “colon cancer,” affects over 100,000 individuals each year in the United States. These are newly diagnosed cases that affect both men and women. In fact, colorectal cancer is the third most diagnosed cancer. So what can be done?
Dr. Alexander Shapsis of Atlantic Gastroenterology is a Board-Certified gastroenterologist in Brooklyn, New York, who can provide a definitive diagnosis for patients with all types of colorectal cancer, including signet ring cell carcinoma.
Colorectal signet ring cell carcinoma is a type of colon cancer that is relatively rare compared to other varieties. It constitutes approximately 1% of all diagnosed colorectal cancers and can be difficult to diagnose in the earlier stages. These challenges make it more common for patients to experience symptoms and get a diagnosis later than other cancers due to nonspecific colonoscopy findings, including ulceration and stricture, along with fewer pathological features found in biopsy samples.
The ACG Case Reports Journal released information in August of 2023 regarding a male patient, age 41, who was found with ulcerating rectosigmoid stricture within the rectosigmoid colon and bowel obstruction and diagnosed with colorectal signet ring cell carcinoma, stage 4, with peritoneal carcinomatosis. This review discussed the challenges that come with diagnosing this type of colorectal cancer and how it may not be spotted until the later, more concerning stages.
