What can be done to address weight regain after initial gastric bypass procedures?

The one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) is a commonly performed weight loss surgery worldwide. However, weight recurrence over time often requires further treatment, which carries increased risks. Dr. Alexander Shapsis at EndoSlim Clinic NY of Atlantic Gastroenterology of Brooklyn, New York, is a Board-Certified Gastroenterologist who performs the non-surgical gastric bypass revision procedure (not another bariatric surgery) for those who need it.  This is a secondary incisionless procedure designed to correct or improve what was performed initially to ensure the desired results.

Patients who have had gastric bypass surgery in the past may need another procedure in the future, depending on the goals that have been reached with the guidance of our gastroenterology team. In fact, it has been proven by UCLA Health that up to 35% of patients who have gastric bypass performed may regain a significant amount of their weight back or find that they are unable to achieve adequate weight loss following their procedure. This may lead to a recommendation for revision surgery or, now, a non-surgical endoscopic procedure!

Who might require a gastric bypass revision procedure?

The gastric bypass revision can now be done endoscopically to help patients who have regained unwanted weight after their initial appointment and need to lose more weight to reach a healthier level for their height and frame.

What are the benefits of the gastric bypass revision procedure?

The endoscopic revision of the OAGB (ER-OAGB) is an endoscopic incision-less technique that safely helps patients lose over 18% of their body weight within the year following their bariatric revision. This has been proven by a recent study performed in November of 2023 in Therapeutic Advances in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, Volume 16.

At Atlantic Gastroenterology in Brooklyn, New York, Dr. Alexander Shapsis, our Board-Certified Gastroenterologist, is available to help patients have endoscopic gastric sleeve gastroplasty for effective surgical weight loss results in patients who are afflicted by overweight or obesity.
