Understanding the endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty procedure

Patients who struggle with jumpstarting significant weight loss may find themselves challenged by the changes in their diet and activity routine. They might feel disappointed that they cannot achieve the results they want. In certain situations, Dr. Alexander Shapsis of EndoSlimClinic, part of  Atlantic Gastroenterology in Brooklyn, New York, might recommend certain weight loss procedures such as the endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, also referred to by the acronym ESG.

What is endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty?

Dr. Shapsis describes endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, or ESG, as a nonsurgical endoscopic weight loss procedure. It is a minimally invasive procedure that helps reduce the size of the stomach to help you lose weight. This particular treatment is much less invasive than other surgical options that might be considered for substantial weight loss, such as gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy. This procedure is specifically intended to reduce the size of your stomach by stapling it together and creating folds.

What happens during the ESG weight loss procedure?

During an endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, Dr. Shapsis will use a flexible tube-like device with a camera attached to it in order to view and treat the inside of your stomach. The endoscope has a small device attached to it that uses an electrical current or laser energy to create multiple internal staples, separating a portion of your stomach and creating folds. This helps reduce the volume of your stomach and makes you feel full faster, leading to weight loss over time.

Who is a good candidate for ESG?

The ESG Merit trials used to determine the effectiveness of this treatment performed exceptionally well. This procedure is best for patients who have a body mass index over 30 and have been unable to achieve results with both diet and exercise. Patients with health conditions related to their excess weight, such as type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, heart disease, and high blood pressure, will also benefit dramatically from losing weight and improving nutrition and activity levels for life!
