Frequently asked questions about the Fibroscan liver test
At Atlantic Gastroenterology, our Board-certified provider, Dr. Alexander Shapsis, provides patients in and around the Brooklyn, New York area with services to evaluate their overall health and well-being. This includes offering screening tools to monitor the function of certain organs in the body.
Our team is excited to introduce a specialized screening known as the Fibroscan liver test. Below are some of the frequently asked questions about the Fibroscan liver test at our office.
What is the Fibroscan liver test?
With the Fibroscan liver test, patients can obtain a definitive diagnosis of their liver function and health. Unlike conventional examinations used to evaluate the liver, patients using the Firboscan diagnostic tool will enjoy a fast, easy, and nonsurgical alternative to traditional liver biopsies.
This particular test can be used to determine or diagnose any of the following liver health conditions:
- Alcoholic liver disease
- Autoimmune hepatitis
- Cirrhosis
- Genetic diseases
- Hemochromatosis
- Hepatitis B
- Hepatitis C
- Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
- Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)
- Viral infections
What can I expect from my Fibroscan appointment?
When you arrive at our office, you will complete intake paperwork regarding your medical history and overall health. We invite you to bring any medical insurance plans/cards that you have that can be applied to your appointment. The appointment will take approximately 30 minutes, while the scanning takes just about five minutes to complete.
It is not performed with any type of sedation or pain medication, and patients can drive themselves to and from their appointments. During the procedure, you will lie on your back and raise your right arm above your head to expose the right abdominal area to the doctor. We recommend wearing loose-fitted clothing for this appointment.
An ultrasound gel is applied to the skin, and a device is placed over the liver area. This ultrasound device may make slight vibrations as it delivers the ultrasound waves to the liver area for measurement and the complete diagnostic process.
How long does it take to receive the results from the Fibroscan evaluation?
With most of our patients, we are able to return the results from this ultrasound scan within just a few minutes, making recommendations for certain treatments if needed. We can provide a definitive diagnosis of many liver conditions using the Fibroscan information.
