The five study results of Semaglutide vs Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)
At Endoslim Clinic of Atlantic Gastroenterology, Dr. Alexander Shapsis and his team provide patients in and around Brooklyn, New York with a selection of services, especially for patients looking to combat obesity. It has been determined that approximately 42% of Americans are impacted by obesity, making it an epidemic in the United States. However, few seek medical treatment to lower their body mass index or BMI.
Dr. Alexander Shapsis is well aware of the medical concerns that can develop with increased weight gain and provides several weight loss options, including endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) and Semaglutide weight loss injections. But which one is best? Is ESG more cost-effective than Semaglutide for weight loss? Which one allows you to maintain the results longer? Which one is the best fit for you? Our team at EndoSlim Clinic of Atlantic Gastroenterology can educate you on the choices that might be most appropriate for your personal weight loss goals and needs.
Recent studies comparing ESG and Semaglutide for weight loss
A recent study published in JAMA revealed that procedures such as endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, or ESG, are more effective than the popular weight loss injection, Semaglutide. After this, these weight loss injections have gained traction in the last year or two, and other options, such as Wegovy and Ozempic, have been approved by the United States FDA for weight loss and not just for patients with diabetes.
What were the results of the JAMA study?
Several results were achieved with this study, which revealed the following:
- When the cost of ESG and Semaglutide injections were compared, it was found that a continued regimen of injections to achieve the same results as ESG would cost an additional $33,583.
- ESG has a longer timeframe to achieve results, over five years, while semaglutide is often used for a maximum of two.
- Semaglutide injections would need to be dropped significantly in price to match the cost of ESG: About $10,000.
- Patients looking to lower their body mass index over five years will achieve better results with ESG versus weight loss injections.
- Approximately 1/5th of patients who use Semaglutide injections will discontinue use due to side effects of medication intolerance, in turn leading to regaining weight.
